Need bike advice....help!!!?

Recently bought a Mongoose Woodland all terrain bike from Wal-Mart just so that I could start riding with my son. Has some sort of suspension system and 26 in tires. I like it so far but I'm considering doing a ';challenge'; here in my hometown which involves running, biking 8 miles on trails and kayaking. Will this bike suffice for this event or should I consider making another purchase? Need bike advice....help!!!?
A lighter, higher quality bike would be better suited if the trails are a bit rough. If the trails are smooth and/or your interest is this type of event is limited, it doesn't justify the cost of another bike.

Tune it up, put some new tires and tubes on and go for it. I'd pull the kickstand off to save a pound.

The only thing your bike needs to do is not break down and not be a hassle to ride. Now if you want to be first, then buy a new bike.Need bike advice....help!!!?
I would say NEVER buy a bike at Walmart. But since you already have you'll probably be fine. 8 miles on a trail shouldn't cause any problems. Make sure your chain is lubed and everything is working properly. Visually check the frame for cracks as well. These are things you would do with any bike. Don't forget your helmet. Most organized events won't let you in without one.

If you want to get serious about riding, go to an actual bike shop. For the price of the bike you get actual service that includes fitting, set-up, and expertise. Plus, if you have problems they can actually fix them unlike Walmart who will just exchange it or refund it.

Like has been said, a higher quality, lighter bike would make it easier. If you plan on doing more events, it would be a good idea to do some web research %26amp; visit a few bike shops to see the different models %26amp; find something you like. If this is a one time deal, it should be fine.
It should be ok, it's not a very good bike but should fine for the race.
